Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has proposed a 5 per cent increase in the supplementary duty on services provided through the use of mobile phone SIM or RIM cards. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the proposal in his proposed budget speech for the fiscal year 2020-21 in Parliament chaired by Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.
According to the Finance Minister, it has been proposed to increase the supplementary duty on services provided through the use of SIM / RIM cards of mobile phones from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. As a result, the cost of sending SMS to mobile phones, voice calls and internet usage is increasing, the operators said. As a result of the 5 per cent increase in the supplementary duty, the cost of mobile phone services will be increased from 15.6 per cent VAT, 1 per cent surcharge, 15 per cent supplementary duty and other expenses from 26.7 per cent to 33.25 per cent this time. In the previous financial year also the supplementary duty was increased from 5 percent to 10 percent. As of last March of BTRC, the number of subscribers of four mobile phone operators in the country is 16 crore 53 lakh 36 thousand. And 10 crore 32 lakh 53 thousand internet subscribers.
